LEGAL ISSUES
Surgery may be required if the NEC is severe or doesn’t resolve within a week. The surgeon will remove dead tissue and ruptured parts of the intestine. Sometimes an ostomy, a separate surgery that connects the bowels to an opening in the abdomen, is necessary. The opening will be closed up 6-8 weeks later. Holding someone accountable and receiving compensation will require legal action, which is both time-consuming and expensive.
Painful & scary
NEC can cause a hole to form in your baby's intestines. This makes bacteria inside the intestinal tract leak into your child's intestinal wall and sometimes out into the abdominal cavity. This causes an infection and can harm a small or large part of the intestine.
